What’s Better For You: Online Therapy or In-Person Therapy?

“Is online therapy as good as in-person therapy?”

“Can my therapist really help me through a screen?”

“Am I getting the full experience through online therapy”

“Is online therapy even worth it?”

If you are hesitating about whether or not to start online therapy, you may be asking yourself these questions. As professionals, we do not aim to deliver a healing experience that is any less than what you deserve or know you are hoping for.

Online therapy has become a necessity in the past year that the psychology and counseling community have optimized its benefits and uses so you can get the same and maybe even more out of your therapy appointments!

When considering if you should meet with a therapist in person or online there are some important things to consider.

Here are some benefits:

  1. Online therapy can make mental health care much more accessible.
Telehealth increases access to care. If you are in a rural area or part of the country with limited access to mental health care, you can see any therapist licensed in your state with telehealth. If you see a psychologist (PhD) licensed through PSYPACT and you live in any of these states, you can see a therapist that is licensed in any of those states! For example, if you live in North Carolina, you can see a psychologist who lives and practices in Georgia or Illinois. Do you feel you have exhausted all resources in your local area? Or, are you worried about privacy and want to see someone who is further from your residential area? Maybe none of your close therapy clinics accept your insurance or are not specialized in your needs. Our psychologists licensed through PSYPACT may be able to help!
  2. Telehealth can also easily fit into your schedule.
You take out the commute before and after the appointment. This allows for more flexibility in scheduling. You can take 45 minutes out of your lunch break, for example!
  3. Online therapy is SECURE!
Privacy is something you need to think about. If you are doing a Telehealth appointment you want to make sure your space is private where no one can hear you. You also want to make sure you feel safe and comfortable in the space that you are in. Additionally, you want to ensure that someone will not walk into the room.

If you chose to do a Telehealth appointment, having a white noise app or machine to block sounds can be helpful. Making sure no one will come into your space you are holding the appointment is also very important. Additionally, you want to make sure you have a reliable internet connection. If your internet is not reliable, Telehealth may not be the best option.

Equipoise Teletherapy uses SimplePractice to manage all client’s information and conduct the online therapy video sessions! Unlike Zoom, SimplePractice are secure and HIPAA-compliant. This means that you don’t have to worry about anyone recording your sessions or having them get accessed by anyone other than your therapist!

Contact us if you have any other concerns or questions about online therapy! When speaking with your therapist, you want to be open and share any concerns you have about Telehealth and discuss with them if in-person or Telehealth could be a better fit given your situation. We can talk to you more about pros and cons of both options.
